Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic are providing a free pop-in clinic for referees of Northumberland Football Association (FA) on Monday, 11th June 2018 at their Jesmond based clinic.
As part of the partnership, launched in November last year, between Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic and Northumberland FA, the clinic are committed to providing injury prevention, treatment and education services to all affiliates of Northumberland FA, this includes referees.
On Monday, 11th June 2018, Osteopath, Will Philllips will be available at the Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic, 4 Towers Avenue, Jesmond, NE2 3QE, from 6pm to 7.30pm to offer advice and support to Northumberland FA referees.
At the pop-in clinic referees will have the opportunity to discuss any musculoskeletal issues they may have whilst working, exercising or refereeing and have a general musculoskeletal health check.
Talking about the pop-in clinic, Will said, “With simple observations of your posture and range of movement I will be able to identify any areas of tightness or restriction in your body that may be affecting your ability to function at your best. I will also provide advice, support and where necessary stretching and exercises or recommendations for treatment options.”
While player injuries are commonly reported, referee injuries can often be overlooked. Referees, assistant referees and fourth officials often exercise regularly and play an active role in several football matches per week during the football season alongside regular ‘every-day’ jobs, as a result they are just as prone to injury as football players.
Research has shown that the sporadic changes in motion from jogging to bursts of sprinting, to running backwards and frequent side steps can have an impact on the musculoskeletal health of referees. Along with foot and ankle complaints therapists at Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic often see referees who have low back pain, knee pain and hamstring complaints.
In addition to this pop-in clinic, Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic also provide access to an injury-advice hotline where therapists offer free injury advice to affiliated members who have signed up to their injury prevention, treatment and education scheme. Northumberland FA members can also access physiotherapy, osteopathy, massage, bespoke rehabilitation, biomechanical analysis, and podiatry treatments along with other many other services, including access to a sports consultant, nutritionist and orthopaedic surgeons and fast-track ultrasound and MRI scans.
Karen Dearden, Newcastle Sports Injury Clinic Director said: “We hope that by providing these services through the partnership, which will be facilitated at our three clinics based in Newcastle, Jesmond and Alnwick, and by providing pop-in clinics and workshops on topics of interest to the members, we can reduce the number of injuries sustained by football players in Northumberland and the support teams around them.”
